Creggs U18 girls played Sligo RFC in the Connacht division 1 final in the newly named Dexcom Stadium Galway this Sunday and came away with a hard fought 32-26 Victory.

 

On a windy day, it was always going to be hard to control kicks and passes but it was Creggs who had the better of the first half, with an early try from Ciara Corrigan, however Sligo responded almost immediately to Level the scores, Creggs Had Further  tries by Merisa Kiripati  and Jemima Adams Verling and took a 15-5 lead and looked in control , however Sligo did score a converted try with the last play of the first half when the raced in from 25 meters after finding a soft shoulder at the side of the ruck and the half time score was 15-12 in Creggs favour,.

 

The second half the bigger Sligo pack were now finding holes in the Creggs defence and it was them who got the next score after 15 minutes to take a 19-15 lead. The Creggs girls dug deep and meters were hard gained against a very well drilled Sligo outfit however and after a good move in midfield between Siofra Hession and Sarah Purcell, Siofra went over in the corner to restore the Creggs Lead by 20-19.

 

Creggs Continued with hard carries especially in centre by Sarah Purcell and quick penalties by Jemima Adams Verling to try and break the Sligo Defence and after some great work up front by the pack , the ball was moved wide by Aoibhinn Murray who fed Shauna Walsh who released Olivia Kelly in the corner for a crucial score with 7 minutes remaining to stretch the Creggs Lead to 25-19.

 

Creggs now knew victory was close and continued to attack and Sarah Purcell got in for a score with 1 minute remaining which was converted by Siofra Hession to stretch the lead further to 32-19 . From the final kick off Sligo did manage to get in for a consolation score to leave the final score. Creggs 32 Sligo 26.

 

That’s the 3rd U18 Division 1 League final in a row for this squad and shows some commitment and consistency and even with  a lot of new faces who came on board this year, the results and performances have not dipped.
