Creggs 24 – Galway Bay 14.

Creggs Boys U16 head to Castlebar for the plate final against Galway Bay on Saturday. On an unusual sunny dry day, the best that has come all year so far, it also proved to be the best day all year for the U16 boys squad when they triumphed by a score line of 24 -14.

Both teams were showing signs of nerves in the first few minutes but it was the Creggs side who got on the score board first. In a very swift move out the backline getting Jack Finn over for 5 and the conversion was added by Kaylum Curran. This got Creggs up and running. Galway Bay were not phased by this and proved their worth by scoring two tries and two conversions to go into half time 14-7 in front.

At half time Creggs made a few changes and brought in a few fresh legs. Ivan Bikoi came on for James Trundle and Myles McSharry came in for Dylan Fallon. In a very tight second half Creggs boys had to manage with 14 men when one team mate got sin binned for a high tackle. This situation seemed to lift the Creggs side to work harder. It was that man again Jack Finn who got over for his second try and converted by Kaylum Curran. Half way through the second half both teams were 14-14. At this point in the game Creggs were back to 15 and growing in confidence, moving the ball with a bit of flare it was Dan Kelly who got over in the corner and a brilliant conversion by Curran put Creggs back in front 21-14. It was down to game management at this stage. Creggs dealt with the kick off and made their way back up the pitch where they won a penalty advantage. While play continued Curran took on a drop goal and pushed the score line to 24-14. With four minutes on the clock Galway Bay needed two scores to win. The silverware was within touching distance where cool heads on the Creggs side played safe and wound down the clock for a deserved win. A team who were defeated in the league final it was great to get something for a very consistent season only loosing 3 games all year. Congrats Team.
