Boys U.16 Cup
Creggs U.16 boys team got their cup under way when they travelled to Sligo on Saturday. In a tight fought game Creggs came out victorious with a three 3 point win. Creggs winger, Dan Kelly, opened the scoring. Kelly squeezed into the corner to touch it down to lead by 5. Ina tight slow scoring game Kaylum Curran added a penalty a few minutes later extending the lead to 8 – nil. That remained the score at half time.
Sligo upped their game in the second half and Creggs absorbed a lot of pressure and eventually Sligo broke the Creggs defence to score under the posts taking 7 points. Creggs started to make a few changes with Dylan Fallon coming on for Pierce Fannon and Ruari Webb for Robert Bligh and Myles McSharry for Harry Kilcoyne. With these fresh legs on the pitch Creggs asserted themselves on the opposition and a nice kick through by Kaylum Curran put Jack Finn away in the corner and a tremendous conversion by Curran stretched the lead to 15 points to 7. Sligo were not ready to throw in the towel and scored again under the post but the conversion was missed when it came off the posts. Heading into the last 5 mins Creggs were leading 15 points to 12. Cian Trimble was injured and replaced by Rory Kelly. With one score between them any mistake by Creggs could have been costly. Time was to run out for the Sligo challenge when Creggs won a scrum for a knock on and all they had to do was get the ball off the park.
This win for Creggs put them in the driving seat in the group stages of the cup. With three more games on the way, a win on opening day means alot. After losing the replay of the league final replay last week this was a very positive outing. Their next scheduled game is against Dunmore in two weeks time.
