Westport RFC 10 Creggs RFC 10
Creggs U14’s travelled to play Westport in Westport last Sunday morning in their final league game in the U14 League North Division and came away with a hard fought Draw. Unbeaten in the league this year, and already guaranteed the top spot in the league and a Home semi final next weekend, the weather last Sunday was always going to make this a hard fixture.
Played in wet and windy conditions, the teams had to take a break in each half and run for cover during two very heavy hail showers, but both teams to their credit kept trying to run the ball, however the conditions dictated that scores were going to be hard to come by.
Creggs played with the elements in the first half, however Westport defended well for the most period until 15 minutes in, when Creggs scored a try through an intercept on half way by Niall Cunniffe who beat the defenders to the line to leave the scoreline 5-0. Up Front David O Gorman, Danny Arnold, Oisin McConn and Brian Maloney tackled well around the fringes, stopping their opponents pick and driving game.
In the second half Westport had the elements at their backs and used it very effectively for the first 20 minutes keeping their opponents in their half and scored two tries in this time, giving them a 5 point advantage going into the last 10 minutes. Creggs regrouped well and m Ronan Dowd, Shane Purcell, Callum Fahy and Jason Hoare were testing their opponents when they ran at them through the backs and up front Brandon Hanmore, Melvin Conteh, Michael Conroy and David O Gorman were gaining great ground and were rewarded just before the finish when Eoghan Coyle touched down in the corner to give Creggs a share of the points. Creggs play Ballinasloe next Sunday at 12pm in the league semi final in Creggs. Training continues on Wednesday night at 7PM.
