Senior Women lose in Plate Final

Westport RFC 31 Creggs RFC 15

It wasn’t to be for the Creggs Senior womens team today in the Connacht Plate final when they lost 31-15 to Westport in the Dexcom Stadium in Galway.

A flying start by the Creggs Ladies, who were playing with the wind , saw them get in for a try by Susan Reilly which was converted after 5 minutes by Eabha Dowd. Westport responded with a try of their own after 10 minutes and another after 20 minutes , to leave the score 12-7 with time running out in the first half but the Creggs ladies responded with some strong carries by Nadine Fitzmaurice and Gabrielle Kilcommons and they were rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts with the last play of the first half and Eabha Dowd slotted the penalty to leave the half time score 12-10 to Westport.

An early try in the second half for Westport pushed the score out to 19-10 but the Try of the game brought the Creggs ladies back into the game , scored in the Corner after Jennifer Morris offloaded to Kellie Haugh who touched down, to leave the score 19-15 after 15 minutes of the the Second half.

It was Westport who pushed on after that and a couple of scores stretched the lead out to 31-15 but the Creggs Ladies had the best of the last 10 minutes and were denied on a couple of occasions when a score looked likely with Shauna Walsh very close to touching down and the final whistle blew to bring an end to the season for our senior women

Well done to Westport RFC on their victory and a huge thank you to all the senior women who took up the game this year and showed huge improvements since our league started and we took some heavy scorelines ..Its a testament to your willingness to learn and improve .
