Connacht Junior Cup (Last 16)
Corinthians 18 Creggs 19
Creggs J1A team edged past Corinthians in a tight, tense physical battle by a single point in Galway last Saturday evening. This was always going to be a close game as the Galway side are currently in 2nd place in the All Ireland League 2B.
Corinthians opened brightly with a sweeping back move and a chip into the corner allowing their wingers to beat the Creggs cover to put them 5 points ahead.
Creggs responded with a good break from scrum half Mark Dowd linking with back row Tom Callaghan and James Brandon to force a penalty which Shane Purcell converted. Creggs continued to apply pressure with good drives by Danny Arnold, Brian Diffley and Ronan Cahill leading to Shane Purcell finding a gap to touch down near the posts for a try that he converted to leave Creggs 10 points to 5 ahead at the break.
The second half saw the Galway side dominate the early exchanges yielding a penalty for them. Great work from Jack Fleming making his senior cup debut linking with fellow centre Eoghan Coyle led to a Shane Purcell penalty.
Mark Purcell returning from injury marked his return with a massive 45 metres penalty to leave Creggs with a comfortable 8 points lead. However Corinthians responded with a converted try and brought the gap back to a single point to make for a nervy finish. Despite this, Creggs emerged victorious by the single point and now look forward to a huge clash away to Connemara next Sunday in Clifden in the last 8.
