Creggs RFC 2nds travelled to Dangan Sports grounds in Galway city on Sunday to encounter UG in a match to determine which team would be automatically relegated down to J1C league next season. Having defeated Creggs last month by a single point, UG enjoyed home advantage for this play-off game. College went ahead with a close range penalty by fullback Fiachra O’Griofa in the 6th minute and he doubled their advantage with a similar effort after 25 minutes of play. Peter Magliocco broke through for a College try shortly before halftime, with O’Griofa adding the conversion for a 13 nil lead at the break. Creggs had defended with vigour throughout the first half with Chris Duignan saving several dangerous situations while the entire team tackled forcibly.

After the restart Daniel O’Connor landed a penalty before the impressive Magliocco scored his second try of the day for a 21 nil lead. The game was effectively ended as a contest when centre John Kennedy crossed for a try in the 60th minute and UG scored two late tries as the depleted Creggs squad tired in the closing stages. Creggs will now return to the 1C league after 2 years in 1B where the demands of highly competitive games proved difficult for a Creggs squad which lost a number of key players this season. Well done to players and coaches. The club now looks forward to the Junior Cup semi-final V Corinthians next weekend and the upcoming J1A league final.
