Creggs Rugby 17, Castlebar RFC 19. Connacht Junior 1B League
Creggs seniors completed their Connacht League campaign with an entertaining game at The Green on Sunday against Castlebar RFC.
Castlebar started impressively and put Creggs under severe pressure with centre Luke Staunton scoring a fine try after 10 minutes, which outhalf Paul Coady converted. Mark Staunton added a second try for Castlebar midway through the first half which Coady also converted to put Castlebar 14-0 ahead.
Creggs replied with a well worked try by Michael Farrell after crisp handling by the backline created an overlap for Farrell to touch down in the right corner. At the break, it was 14-5 to Castlebar.
Castlebar scored a third try in the 45th minute when the Creggs defence was stretched to breaking point to go 19 -5 ahead.
Creggs hit back immediately with a try by impressive number 8 Kevin Brandon and the game was really in the balance when Shane Dowd scored a sensational solo try following an 80 metre run leaving several defenders in his wake. Dowds conversion left just 2 points between the teams but Castlebar held out for a hard-earned win.
