Creggs RFC 47, Corinthians 5.
Creggs eventually ran out easy winners in an entertaining Cup final played in perfect conditions at Ballyhaunis on Friday night last.
However, the final scoreline does scant justice to a Corinthians team which put it up to Creggs for 60 minutes before being overwhelmed in the final quarter.
Corinthians started in whirlwind fashion and scored a fine try after just 3 minutes. They continued to dominate the opening quarter and only stout defence prevented further scores as their high tempo game clearly unsettled Creggs.
Gradually the Creggs pack became more influential and an Andrew Callaghan try levelled the scores at 5 all after 24 minutes. Two Mark Brandon penalties stretched Creggs lead to 11 5 by halftime.
Winger Chris Duignan produced a moment of magic with a superb interception shortly after half-time and he romped home from halfway to touch down under the posts.
Alan Brandon added 2 tries one of which was a superb solo effort while Eoghan Coyle and Elliot Jennings also scored tries to put Creggs out of sight.
The final try was one of the highlights of the game with prop forward Eoghan Farrell showing his power and pace to cut through for a fine score in the closing minutes of a highly entertaining contest.
This game brought the season to an end in style for a Creggs side which has now captured 2 trophies in the last month as well as winning promotion to J1A League for next season.
Great credit is due to the players and their management team and their success is richly deserved.
