Creggs stage great comeback to overcome Tuam

Creggs RFC 13, Tuam RFC 12.

Creggs overcame a 12-0 half-time deficit to edge out a strong Tuam challenge in Saturday’s Connacht Junior 2 League fixture played at the Green in Creggs.

Tuam were very impressive during the early stages as they spread the ball from wing to wing, and Creggs struggled with their pace and handling ability. Tuam crossed for two well worked tries by outhalf David Burke and fullback Denis Kelly with Burke also kicking a conversion to really throw down the gauntlet to Creggs.

Creggs responded with a Stephen Crehan penalty in the 45th minute following great work by the pack, and shortly afterwards impressive winger Thomas Greene rounded off a slick handling move with a try to reduce Tuam’s lead to 12 – 8.

Tuam defended with great determination in the final quarter but eventually winger Damien Miskell broke clear for the match-winning try after good work by fullback Aidan Geraghty.

Creggs held out for a vital win with Mark Hester, Eoghan Cahill, Stephen Crehan, Graham Curran and Seamus Collins were outstanding for a rejuvenated home team.

Creggs travel to Clifden next Sunday to meet the Connemara RFC (All-blacks).
