Curley Cup (First Round)
Portumna RFC 3 Creggs RFC 21
The Creggs First Team got the new season off to a winning start with a hard fought victory over Portumna at the Castle Park grounds in Portumna on Saturday.
Both teams displayed signs of rustiness in the early stages with lots of handling errors disrupting the flow of the game.
Creggs went ahead in the 16th minute when the referee awarded a penalty try following persistent infringements by the home team.
Despite further pressure, Creggs failed to translate possession into scores and Portumna responded with a successful penalty kick shortly before half-time.
Two well struck penalties by Mark Brandon put Creggs back in control before he dropped a goal midway through the second half to give his team a 10 point cushion.
A fine handling move involving backs and forwards was rounded off with a try by Alan Brandon to complete the scoring with ten minutes remaining.
Creggs will be happy with the win, but will need to be considerably sharper for the start of the League campaign in a two weeks.
Elliot Jennings made a very impressive debut on the wing, and he promises to be an exciting addition to the squad. Mark Brandon, the Callaghan brothers (Tom and Andrew), Aidan Leech, Ronan Cahill and Alan Brandon were also to the fore for Creggs.
Creggs squad: C Duignan, E Jennings, M Farrell, T Callaghan (Capt.), D Feeney, M Brandon, A Callaghan: A Leech, S Og Higgins, M Blighe, B Donoghue, D Nolan, A Brandon, K Brandon, R Cahill, B Coady, E Tully, M Feeley, and A Glennon.
Creggs now play Ballyhaunis RFC away next weekend in Round 2 of the Curley Cup. Thereafter, the following two weeks will feature two home Saturday night Connacht League matches.
