Creggs Rugby 8, Loughrea RFC 7.
Creggs snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in their Connacht Junior 1 League match with a late try by winger Luke Meehan. It denied a brave and totally committed Loughrea side in Friday night’s League game at The Green.
Loughrea led 7-3 heading into injury time but Creggs piled on the pressure and eventually created a chance out wide for Meehan to crash through a number of tackles for the match-winning score.
Loughrea had given everything in a concerted defensive effort and were unlucky to lose to a Creggs team which made a lot of uncharacteristic errors.
Creggs opened brightly but spurned a couple of penalty chances in the early stages of an eminently forgettable first half.
Creggs had the benefit of the wind in the second half but were rocked when Loughrea capitalised on sloppy handling to touch down under the posts for a converted try.
Creggs hit back with a Brian Cleary penalty in the 48th minute, but despite dominating thereafter, Loughrea defended superbly until finally outflanked for Meehan’s vital late try.
Forwards Sean Og Higgins, Mike Blighe, Aidan Leech and Kevin Brandon were to the fore in sparking the late revival by Creggs, while backs Shane Dowd and Tom Callaghan also made key contributions.
Creggs play Castlebar at The Green next weekend.
