Creggs under 17 selection played Wicklow RFC in Creggs last sunday in a very enjoyable pre-season friendly. Wicklow RFC were on a pre-season trip to Delphi adventure centre in Mayo where they enjoyed a 25 points to 12 win over Castlebar on friday night. Creggs began brightly and after 10 minutes, the ball was won in the lineout by Tom Oates with support from Edward Clinton and then passed by scrum-half Kevin Gavin to outhalf Noel Gately who sold a dummy in midfield and scampered home under the posts for a try that he himself converted.
Center’s Rory O’Brolochain and Maurice Buckley tackled with authority and showed neat handling to link in attack. Our forwards were dominant in the loose with Matthew Brandon,Simon Spain,Alex Syrek and Eoghan Farrell to the fore. A second try followed in the second half with wingers Rory Collins,Ryan Horan and full back Brian Cleary combining to send Kevin Gavin in for a deserved try which was converted. A Noel Gately penalty was Creggs last score after some good forward drives by Ross Mugan and Brian Collins and support play by second half substitutes Michael Dilger and Evan Concar.
Wicklow showed that they can play a bit as well by scoring two tries of their own and with the last play of the game a missed Creggs tackle saw Wicklow score under the posts to sneak a victory by two points.
Creggs U16 and U17 players continue training each Monday night at 7pm and anyone who wishes can also join the senior players for training on Tuesday and Friday at 8pm.We hope to have another friendly in the next few weeks against Longford.
