Creggs 13 Galwegians 17
Creggs came up just short against table-toppers Galwegians in Sunday’s closely contested J1C league game on Creggs 4G pitch. Galwegians opened with some strong attacks which resulted in an early try as Creggs were outflanked by their speedy opponents. A penalty by Brian Cleary reduced the deficit to 5-3 before scrumhalf Cormac Dolan scored a fine try for the home team after excellent work in midfield by Padraig Geraghty creating the initial opening. Brian Cleary added the conversion to leave Creggs ahead by 10-5 at halftime. Mark Brandon landed a long-range penalty shortly after the restart but Galwegians hit back with another well-worked try out wide in the 52nd minute with score at 13 -10. Creggs had a number of excellent scoring opportunities in a frantic last quarter but just couldn’t get over for another try. Eventually
Galwegians broke downfield and gained a foothold deep in Creggs territory which resulted in the match winning converted try in the 76th minute to put the Galway city side ahead by 17 -13. Creggs threw everything at Galwegians but they held firm to preserve their unbeaten record. Creggs must travel to Glenina next Sunday for the return fixture with a league final spot very much in their sights with 4 league games still remaining.
