Creggs 1st V Tuam in Division 1A League
Creggs opened their Round 1 J1A league fixture against Tuam with a win 26 pts to 19 on Saturday evening last in Creggs. Creggs opened brightly and forced a number of lineouts outside the Tuam 22 metre line. Sean Og Higgins found Ciaran Purcell and a great drive ensued with the Tuam pack having to pull down the resultant maul. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try after just 6 minutes.
After the restart Creggs returned to the Tuam half of the field and centres David Gaquin and Eoin Coyle punched holes across the gain line. Mark Dowd transferred to Shane Purcell who passed to Ronan Dowd for the second try. Shane Purcell converted expertly from the touchline. The rest of the first half saw Creggs dominate the play but squander a number of opportunities for tries.
The second half saw Tuam have their best period with outhalf Carl Ward set up a number of chances and after 8 minutes centre Ian Murphy crossed for a good try which Ward converted. Creggs responded with a brilliant solo try by centre Eoin Coyle, sidestepping several would be tacklers on his way to the line. The conversion was missed.
Tuam kept making a game of it and it needed good defensive work from Brian Donoghue, Lee Kilcoyne and Chris Duignan to keep them out. A further try by Eoin Coyle following a kick ahead by Brian Donoghue gave Creggs some breathing space but a late try by wing forward Alan Finnerty for Tuam kept the result in doubt till the final whistle. Creggs 26 Tuam 19.
