Connacht J1B League
Creggs 16 – Galwegians 19
Creggs seconds team played at home in their league match on Sunday afternoon against Galwegians RFC. Creggs opened the game on a positive setting with their forwards making great carries and huge tackles leading to the first score, a penalty from 38 meters out. Brian Cleary converted putting 3 points between the teams. Wegians had huge difficulty holding onto possession and were stripped regularly by the marauding pack. They only showed danger of scoring once in the first half when their 9, Ben Donnelly sprinted 50 meters being stopped 5 short of the line. This was Wegians only attempt at scoring in the first half. Before half time Cleary kicked a second penalty and Creggs led 6 -nil going into the break.

Wegians half time chat had them ready for the second half and attacked the Creggs 22 on numerous occasions before eventually breaking through to score 7 putting them one point ahead. Creggs were up to the challenge and again some great breaks by Mike Feeley and Ronan Cahill kept Creggs in attack mode. A penalty was awarded to Creggs on the 10 meter line which saw Cleary kick his third penalty putting Creggs 9-7 ahead again. Galwegians pressed hard and a loose Creggs tackle left them in for their second try and a 12 -9 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Creggs had to get a score and winning a penalty on their 10 Cleary kicked into the Wegians 22. The clean lineout saw a great maul with Creggs rolling off each side and eventually touching down with Shane Maloney getting 5 and Cleary converting to go 16 – 12 ahead. An expectation was felt that Creggs had this game secured with only minutes remaining but a Galwegians knock on from their kick off was not dealt with, giving them possession in the Creggs half. Two minutes later a miss match in the center near the posts saw tackles missed and Wegians scoring their 3rd try, con by Donnelly with the final score 16 -19 to the visitors.
Thanks to Abraham Griffin who stepped in to referee this game when the assigned referee was a “no show”. He had earlier reffed the Womens game so luckily he stayed on and did his second match of the day.
