Men’s 2nd Team
Creggs RFC 2nd team played host to Westport in their J1B league game on Sunday. Westport who were relegated last season from J1A , and Creggs 2nds promoted from J1C, this game was always going to be a tough challenge for the home side. From the kick off Westport gained attacking ground from a penalty. Within three minutes their left wing Alan Sheridan received quick ball across the full width of the pitch and sprinted without challenge to score at the corner flag. The conversion was between the posts and the 7 point lead. Again from the kick off, Devine was penalised letting Westport gain possession and shockingly their same winger scored under the posts when he faced off with a prop trying to defend out wide. 14 nil down after 8 minutes left Creggs with a tough first half. Some great breaks and carries had Creggs at the Westport 22 but no real threat on the try line. Some huge clearances from the boot of full back Padraig Geraghty and some quick attacks by Luke Divilly and Mark Battles showed promise until a quick throw in let the Westport no.8 break un-tackled to the 22 and passing the ball it was chipped ahead, gathered and their 3rd try and conversion leaving half time 21 -0.
A great reply saw Creggs attack with purpose forcing numerous penalties inside the 22 and the referee showing two yellow cards to Westport. Creggs ran each penalty with a deserved 7 point resulting scored by Aodan Kelly and Mark Brandon. Creggs were in in control attacking hard for the next 10 minutes before giving away a kickable penalty to push the gap out to 17 points. Creggs subs were doing well and forced further attacks again where with great forward pressure eventually getting Mike Feeley in for 5 converted by Brandon. At 24 – 14 Creggs the match was getting tight again where the Westport packs dominance gave them attacking ball inside the 22 with Corcoran the big 8 taking 7 points at the posts from quick 5 meter penalty. Creggs pushed hard in the dying minutes into the Westport 22 but their defence stood strong. Final score 31-14. The score was not a true reflection of the effort made by Creggs who suffered from the Westport quick 14 point lead.
