Creggs Rugby lands 3 Connacht titles in 3 Days

Winning three Connacht Finals is a wonderful way to bring a great competitive season for the club to an end. And that’s what Creggs Under 17’s, Under-18’s and Under-19’s delivered between last Wednesday and Saturday.

First up were the Creggs Under 18.5’s, who defeated Westport-Monivea RFC’s by 38 – 17 to complete a a double of Connacht titles. 10 days previously they won the Connacht League Final, also in the Sportsground.

Next up were Creggs Under-17’s who defeated Monivea RFC by 34 – 29 in their Final at Crowley Park in Galway on Saturday afternoon last. This was tough and closely contested Final, as the scoreline suggest but this ever improving Creggs team deserving won the title on the day.

Then later on Saturday, the Creggs Under-20’s also defeated Monivea RFC in the Connacht Under-20 Plate Final by 58 – 21 in Creggs. Despite missing a number of players due to college exams, the Connacht Juniors v Ulster game and a couple of injuries, Creggs ran out convincing winners.

While a lot of the Creggs Under-20 players were unavailable for the Under-20 Cup Semi-Final v Corinthians RFC, and we lost that game, Corinthians went on to defeat Ballina in that Final, indicating that with a full-team Creggs can compete at this level with any team in the province.

The Under-17’s, Under-18’s and Under-20’s Connacht Final wins are a great way to close the club’s competitive season, and another big chapter in what is being delivered so much on and off the field for the club.

We still have the Connacht v Munster Junior Inter-Provencial in Creggs on Saturday, May 11th. Congrats again to the seven Creggs players (Aidan Leech, Brian Diffley, James Brandon, Shane Dowd, Brian Donohue, Andrew Callaghan, and Maurice Bucley) and Pat Cunningham is one of the coaches in the 2019 Connacht Junior rugby squad.

Unfortunately, they wend down to current champions Ulster by 34 – 20 in their first round in Castlebar last Saturday. Creggs second-row Brian Donohue scored a Connacht try five minutes into the second half to regain the lead for home team but after that Ulster were the more dominant team. Well done Brian and all the Creggs lads.

On the evening of the Inter-Pro (Saturday, May 11th.) there will be medal presentations to various teams in the clubhouse. And there is still lots more going on with the ‘Give it A Try’ Initiative for girls aged 10 to 14 starting in Creggs on Monday evening week (B.Hol. May 6th.), and the Connacht Summer Camp (for 6-12 year-olds) in the first week in July. We also have the opening of the new pitches and amenity walk also to come.
